Body Language Secrets You Should Know

body-languageEven when you don’t say a single word, people can learn a lot about the type of person you are and what are your feelings and thoughts.

How is that? They simply study your body language, the messages you send out unconsciously with your body gestures and your facial expressions.

Imagine, some body language experts claim that the words we speak represent only 7% of all that we communicate to other people. Our body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions will communicate the rest of our messages.

What types of messages are you send to others with your body language? Does your body language encourage  people to approach you or do you subconsciously warn them to stay away form you?

If you think about the way you usually stand or sit when you are with other people, what are you doing with your hands and where are you looking with your eyes?

What does your face expresses? Interest in the people you are with, or does it stay a tense, stony mask?

If you usually stand or sit with the arms crossed in front of the chest, how do you think people perceive your posture? Did you know that most people will subconsciously perceive your arms crossed in front of your chest as a signal that you don’t want anyone to approach you? Only the bravest might to come to you when you adopt this posture.

Standing awkwardly with your chest slumped forward and your eyes avoiding people will make people think that you are depressed or totally lacking in confidence. You do not project any sign that you have any interest in the people around you. Instead you look like you would like to disappear. People may fear that trying to talk with you will not be a pleasant experience.

Even if you desperately want someone to come over and befriend you, if your body language shows disinterest in others, it is more likely that no one will come and try to chat with you.

Signals that will encourage people to come forward and approach you

Always aim for a posture that is upright and alert, yet relaxed. Straighten up your chest or shoulders if you notice that are slumping.

Breathing

Try to be more aware of how you are breathing. Check if your breath move in and out smoothly or if it moves more with little stops and starts? This would be a sign of anxiety. Mentally and consciously tell your muscles to relax.

Hands
Where do you put your hands what do you do with them? Try to relax your arms and your hands. You can put a hand in your pocket, or hold something if you want, but then make sure you keep your hand at the side of your body, not in front of it.

Arms
Never cross your arms in front of your chest when you want to meet people. Keep your arms as relaxed as possible at your sides.

eyeFocus
Stay aware of and focused on the people around you and your surroundings. Look and be interested in what is happening.

Facial expression
A pleasant smile will certainly do the trick. Do not force with a smile that never softens. It would certainly not look natural. A gentle smile with a twinkle in your eyes will give other people the impression that talking to you must be a pleasant experience.
